MELBOURNE

In October 2005 my mother and I traveled to Australia for my brother's wedding.  We arranged to spend the last evening in Melbourne. While Brisbane was very warm and humid, Melbourne was cold, windy, and rainy.

By 3pm we had checked into the Airport Holiday Inn, reviewed the "what to do" brochures, and were on a bus to downtown.

We barely made the last 4pm departure of the cruise boat. The office was only open M-F with a note "On weekends proceed direct to Berth 5." Where is that? I asked directions from a girl on the sidewalk who happened to work for the cruise. She phoned and told them to wait a few minutes for us.

The captain told the history of the city and bridges

Here's a view of the skyline from the boat

The Eureka Tower, at 92 floors, will be the world's tallest apartment building. That is Southgate Mall straight down. More info on tower here.

We wandered around Southgate Mall, stopping at this gift shop for souvenirs

The mall had a nice food court with a dozen types of food. I settled on the Indian food. But when I started to take a photo the girl on the right got upset "You get permission from the manager." I thought for a minute - even if the manager said "No photos, eh?" I would have still taken a photo. So to save time I snapped the above.

For about $8 U.S. I got this huge plate. I chose the lentils, eggplant, and spinach. It was very good and no waiting.

My mother opted for a Greek Sandwich

Eureka Tower again - I catch the base of it in my next photo - looking back over the river at Southgate Mall, after walking north over the bridge:

We walked across the river and around the town a bit in the cold evening before catching the bus back to the airport.

The building in the back is under construction, and will be the tallest apartment building in the world.
