August 2, 2009 - Placer Hills Winery Tour

We visited three wineries that are only about 15 minutes from Citrus Heights. In all cases the owners/winemakers and their families conducted the tastings - contrast to Napa Valley where you only meet hired help. On the way home we ate at Original Lorenzo's Mexican Restaurant in Loomis - Taylor Road. It was nice to experience new things so close to home.

In 1848 wine grapes were first introduced in Placer County, the same year James Marshall discovered gold. The Frenchman, Claude Chana, who discovered gold in Auburn Ravine, planted the first grape vines. Along with the miners, the Gold Rush of 1848 brought European winemakers who established larger vineyards and started producing increasing quantities and varieties of wine. In the 1860s winemaking became a thriving industry and many miners became winemakers, giving Placer County more vineyards and wineries than Sonoma and Napa combined. Then, in 1920 Prohibition made alcohol illegal and most vineyards were converted to pear, apple and citrus orchards. In the 1970s local winemakers began to establish new vineyards and returned the land to its winemaking roots.

The Placer Hills Winery Tour is a collaborative open-house style winery tour hosted by twelve Placer County boutique wineries. Meet winemakers, wine grape growers and other wine enthusiasts while tasting award-winning artisan wines in the down-to-earth atmosphere of the Sierra Foothills.

Christaldi Vineyards www.cristaldivineyards.com

The Cristaldis (pictured at right below) create a wide variety of wines and olive oils, consistent with their Italian heritage. I purchased a bottle of the 2006 Fruit Shed Red.

Duarte Family Vineyards www.duartefamilyvineyards.com

Michael Duarte was serving his Barbera. It was the best Barbera I've tasted so we talked for awhile. He is also a software developer.

He gave me a bottle that I agreed to share with others.

Lone Buffalo Vineyards www.lonebuffalovineyards.com

This was a fun stop. I purchased a bottle of Where The Buffalo Roam - Red Wine - 2007 and a souvenir glass.

Secret Ravine Vineyard and Winery  www.secretravine.com

The wines were very good. I purchased 2004 Zinfandel and 2006 Rattlesnake Red (85% Sangiovese and 15% Cabernet Savigion). We then had a quick tour of their facility
